Display

Portamap offers a easy to use interface with the common functions required for gps navigation and basic field mapping. The main map interface offers tools to pan, zoom, follow gps, and capture. Portamap uses workspaces in order to make the loading and unloading of data easy. Workspaces are created with the 'portamap manager. Data is loaded from the layers menus.

Waypoints can be collected using the stylus or the current gps position. The default format for storing waypoints is the geographic exchange format(gpx) which is a standardxml format which allows easy exchange of data between compatible applications.

Lines and polygons can be captured as ESRI shapefiles. Currently portamap does not read or write the dbf attribute tables of these files but this is currently planned within the current development cycle. If using the portamap extension for ArcGIS dbf files are created for the shapefiles automatically when importing captured data from your device.

Simple text databases of points of interest can be configured for portamap using the portamap manager. Typical uses of this type of database include list of street intersections to aid in navigation and locating of your destination
